Bandido Alcatraz

The iconic escapee Bandido returns in a special edition prepared for the 10th anniversary of the original game’s release. This time, the stakes are higher, and the walls of Alcatraz prison are much harder to overcome. Bandido Alcatraz is not just the same game with a different theme. The roles have reversed: this time, you are trying to provide Bandido with an escape route, and you will face additional challenges along the way.

Gameplay

Bandido Alcatraz is a cooperative game where everyone wins or loses as a single team. While you can discuss strategy, you are not allowed to show your cards to other players or describe them in precise detail. To make the escape a success, you must fulfill three conditions simultaneously:

  • Only one tunnel in the entire network must remain open, leading to the exit (EXIT cards).
  • All other corridors must be closed.
  • You must gather the necessary equipment: 3 raincoats and 2 ropes.

On their turn, a player must play one card, choosing between two paths:

  1. Expanding the network: Adding a card to the existing layout. Tunnels must connect properly—you cannot block a corridor with the wall of a card.
  2. Gathering equipment: Placing a raincoat or rope card next to the draw pile. Once set aside, a card cannot return to the game as a tunnel, but it brings you closer to victory.

If a flooded corridor appears in the network, you must cover it with another card as soon as possible (following the placement rules). If water remains visible at the end of the game, Bandido does not escape!

Review

This anniversary edition introduces an interesting layer of decision-making to the mechanics known from the original. It is no longer enough to just “plug the holes” in the tunnels. Now, we must ensure that an escape route remains open, while also managing the need to collect equipment. This forces players to sacrifice valuable cards—which could have been used to close corridors—in favor of meeting victory conditions.

The flooded tunnel mechanic is a great addition, as it introduces pressure and forces you to cover cards containing water. Once again, the game compels players to play additional cards, which subtly raises the difficulty level.

The game also offers a solo mode, which allows you to adjust the difficulty to your skill level depending on the number of cards drawn at the start. Otherwise, it is the same solid game, though the manual provides four different descriptive ratings for your performance based on the final state of the table.

Naturally, as is typical for card games with a draw pile, there is an element of randomness that shapes the course of the game. However, its impact is mitigated by the player’s hand, where holding three cards allows for decisions on how and when to use them.

Summary

Bandido Alcatraz is an excellent “filler” game that works equally well for a quick session over coffee or as an introduction to a longer board game night. The additional rules of the anniversary edition make the game slightly more intellectually engaging without losing its light character. If you enjoy logic games with a touch of cooperation, this prison break will provide plenty of satisfaction.
